Data and information governance

We have published information on how we're using data to inform the response to COVID-19 via this blog post and in this page, which will be regularly kept updated with examples.

We've also launched a new Coronavirus Status Checker, which will allow those who are self-isolating and those who have tested positive for COVID-19, to record online geographic data and information about their illness to provide a better measure of the number of people with symptoms nationwide.

We are looking at whether app-based solutions might be helpful in tracking and managing coronavirus and have assembled expertise from inside and outside the organisation to do this as rapidly as possible.  The Oxford Big Data Institute published its paper on the potential impact of contact tracing on 31 March.

As the health and social care system is going to face significant pressures in the coming months due to the epidemic, NHSX and NHS Digital have taken the decision to extend the compliance deadline for the national data opt-out and the final date for submission of the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) to 30 September 2020.

In addition, we've produced specific IG guidance for COVID-19. This includes an example supplementary privacy notice to cover the COVID-19 emergency period.  New guidance on the use of mobile phones in hospitals has also been published.  This is particularly important at this time when people may be isolated from loved ones.
