How to use the NHS App to demonstrate your NHS COVID Pass in England

If you are intending to visit an event or venue in England, you may be asked to demonstrate your COVID-19 status when entering the event.

It’s quick and simple to demonstrate your COVID-19 status using the NHS COVID Pass. Using the NHS COVID Pass will help streamline your entry to your event and help you gain access quickly.

By downloading the NHS App onto your smartphone, you can use the NHS COVID Pass to show your vaccination or Lateral Flow Test status or show evidence of natural immunity via a positive PCR test to venue or event staff, if asked to.

Watch our short video on how to use the NHS App to show your COVID status at a venue or event in England:

Alternatively you can download and show an offline version or print a copy of your status and show the printed version instead.

If you don’t have access to a computer or smartphone, then you can order a copy of the NHS COVID Pass letter if you have been vaccinated by telephoning 119 but please note that the letter can take up to 5 working days to reach you.

Find out more about the NHS COVID Pass

You can follow the instructions below on how to download the NHS App and see your COVID-19 status.

There are three simple ways to access the NHS COVID Pass, but we advise that you do this BEFORE you attend the event. Some event locations can be remote, with poor wifi so you may wish to consider printing off your COVID Pass and bringing the paper version with you.

To use the NHS COVID Pass

For domestic purposes, those 18 and over can obtain an NHS COVID Pass if one of the following applies:

  • 2 weeks after completing a full course of vaccination, whether that requires 2 doses or one dose (that is, 2 doses of the Moderna, AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccine, or 1 dose of the Janssen vaccine) (according to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency authorised schedule)
  • with evidence of a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or rapid lateral flow test taken within 48 hours of entry to a venue, with both at-home and on-site (where available) being accepted. A lateral flow test taken at home will need to be reported into the public reporting system
  • with proof of natural immunity shown by a positive PCR test result for COVID-19, lasting for 180 days from the date of the positive test and following completion of the self-isolation period, which needs to be a minimum of 10 days since the positive PCR test result.

You must have been vaccinated in England.

How to obtain the NHS COVID Pass

There are 3 ways you can get the NHS COVID Pass:

  • By downloading and registering for the NHS App (free to download from App stores)
  • Via the NHS website
  • By requesting an NHS COVID Pass letter to be posted to you via the NHS website or 119

1. By downloading and registering for the NHS App

You can access your NHS COVID Pass through the free NHS App on a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet. Proof of your COVID-19 status will be shown within the NHS App.

The NHS App is free but you do need to be registered with a GP in England to use the NHS App.

You will only see your vaccination or test result data if you have registered and verified your identity on the app. You should also log your lateral flow test results using the public reporting system. It can take up to two hours for your results to appear within the app.

Please keep in mind you will need to download and register for the NHS App, and check your status BEFORE travelling to your event.

How to use the NHS COVID Pass on your smartphone or tablet

Download the free NHS App using the Google or Apple App store. Please note you will not be charged for downloading the NHS App. Please note the ‘NHS App’ is different to the ‘NHS COVID-19’ App used to check into venues.

Once you have downloaded and registered for the NHS App, select “Get your NHS COVID Pass” on the homepage, see screenshot below:

Then select "Domestic”, see screenshot below:

From there you will be able to see your COVID-19 status. If you have a valid COVID-19 status for your` event you will see a screen which displays a 2D barcode and a green stripe confirming you have a valid status for entry saying “Valid in England”.

Please ensure that you have checked the expiration date of your NHS COVID Pass before travelling to your event, as your lateral flow test results are only valid for 48 hours.

You can download a PDF copy to your device in advance of the event or email yourself a copy. This PDF version, either on your device or printed, will be accepted for entry.

If you do not see this screen, information will be displayed on how to get an NHS COVID Pass.

2. Access the NHS COVID Pass through the NHS website

You can view your COVID-19 status online and download or print it as a PDF document via the NHS website. To access the service, you’ll need to register for an NHS login if you do not have one already. NHS login registrations may take longer than usual when there are high numbers of requests.

3. Request an NHS COVID Pass letter to be posted to you via the NHS website or by calling 119

Request an NHS COVID Pass letter to be posted to you. Request a letter only if you have been fully vaccinated by the NHS in England.

You can obtain an NHS COVID Pass at age 16 plus but do not need one to access venues or events in England if you are under 18 years of age.

The letter will be sent to the address registered with your GP. If you have recently moved house, make sure you’ve given your new address to your GP practice before requesting a letter.

Please note that the NHS COVID Pass letter will only show your vaccination status and not the results of a lateral flow test.

The letter may take up to 5 working days to reach you, so ensure you order in good time before attending your event. You can order an NHS COVID Pass letter in two ways:

Request an NHS COVID Pass letter via the NHS website

You can ask for a letter by filling in a form online.

Request an NHS COVID Pass letter by calling 119

If you do not have access to a smartphone, computer or tablet you can call 119 and ask for a letter to be posted to you. Lines may be busy so please allow sufficient time to make your telephone call.

Children are not currently being vaccinated against COVID-19.

Therefore, those under 18 should not have to demonstrate their COVID-19 status for entry to domestic events or venues.
