Standards and interoperability

Delivering widely adopted and fit for purpose standards to support the digital transformation of the health and care service

Our mission statement

Standards and interoperability are fundamental to realising the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan, G7 commitments and the The future of healthcare: our vision for digital, data and technology in health and care. They are enablers for joined up, person-centred care. They underpin data sharing so that the right information is available at the right time for those who need it. They support integrated care systems (ICSs) by enabling information to flow between health and social care systems improving health outcomes for individuals and populations. They will support future ambitions of knowledge and information interoperability creating a learning health and care system.

Our programme and ongoing work

The NHSX Standards and Interoperability programme has been established to lead the essential work necessary to improve levels of standardisation and interoperability across the health and care system. We will do this by delivering on five key areas of focus, which are:

  • publishing a strategy for standards and interoperability
  • publishing our open source playbooks
  • launching a standards portal
  • publishing our standards roadmap
  • publishing a new end-to-end model and guidance for standards development

We will be conducting engagement with providers, suppliers and other stakeholders throughout to ensure these initiatives serve user needs.

For more information on our current priorities, you can read our introductory blog post from our Director of Standards and Interoperability, Irina Bolychevsky.

Please forward interoperability standards requests and questions to our team mailbox, interop.standards@nhsx.nhs.uk.
