NHS COVID Pass Verifier app
To assist organisations with checking their customers’ COVID-19 status, the NHS has developed a scanner app called the NHS COVID Pass Verifier app.
The official NHS COVID Pass Verifier app is a secure way to verify an individual’s NHS COVID Pass presented on the NHS App. It verifies that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, had a negative test, or have recovered from COVID-19.
A user, such as a member of your staff, can use the NHS COVID Pass Verifier app to scan and verify an individual’s NHS COVID Pass, in order to gain access to your venue or event.
How to use the NHS COVID Pass Verifier app at your venue or event
The app can be used to scan a 2D barcode within the NHS COVID Pass. It does not store or transmit any personal data during this process.
Event or venue organisations in England can download the free NHS COVID Pass Verifier app from the Apple or Google app stores.
The NHS COVID Pass Verifier app can scan the NHS COVD Pass via a mobile or tablet or where someone has printed off a PDF version from their phone.
It can also scan the 2D barcode of an NHS COVID Pass where your customer has stored this into Apple Wallet using their Apple iPhone. You will need to check the expiry date shown on their COVID Pass as the expiry date will not refresh automatically.
From 30 September, visitors from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Jersey can show their international digital NHS COVID Pass at venues and settings in England. Users from England and Wales can use their domestic NHS Covid Pass as usual.
The NHS COVID Pass Verifier app can be used to scan the 2D barcode displayed on your customer’s phone or printed as a PDF. Scanning of these COVID Passes can be done using the NHS COVID Pass Verifier app in domestic mode (click here for more information).
It is not able to scan the 1D barcode on a letter which your customer has requested by telephoning the NHS 119 service. If your customer displays a letter requested via 119, your staff will need to check the letter and expiry date manually.

The app can be used to scan the 2D barcode within the NHS COVID Pass. It doesn’t store or transmit any personal data during this process, so it’s perfectly safe to use on a personal mobile device.
Find the app in the app store and download it.
Once downloaded, open the NHS COVID Pass Verifier app.
When opened for the first time, the consent agreement screen will display.
You will be asked to agree on a consent form, by clicking ‘I agree’.
The app will not function if you do not click ‘I agree’.
This is the landing page in the app. Click on ‘Check a 2D barcode’
You will need to take a picture of the individual's two-dimensional (2D) barcode, from their NHS COVID Pass – either on their phone or their print-out.
When opening the camera on your mobile device for the first time, please click ‘OK’ to allow the app to have permission to use the camera.
Once the scanner has been pointed at the individual's 2D barcode, it automatically starts scanning the code.
Information will then show to verify the person's COVID-19 status.
If the 2D barcode is not recognised, or has expired, you may need to ask your customer to demonstrate other means of COVID-19 status, or refer to your admittance policy for allowing access to your venue or event.
